Morning Laughter

Maple Syrup

The past few weekends it’s been nice out, so the hubby and I have walked to Cafe San Jose to enjoy a bit of sunshine and a spot of breakfast. Almost every morning, one of us gets something that calls for maple syrup, which always brings on a bout of laughter.

Why the laughter? This story goes back to the Kansas City days, when I lived near a Perkins. One morning we were sitting in a booth at Perkins, plates just sat down before us, and I grabbed the maple syrup from the selection of syrups the waiter had brought to the table. Oblivious to everything in the world except my pancakes, I proceeded to douse each layer of pancake with a good helping of maple syrup, and then added a bit more to the top just for good measure. Coming out of my tiny pancake world, I righted the syrup bottle and looked across the table at my now husband, who had a bemused look on his face. In slow mo, I saw the syrup slide back down into the bottle, and there was a scant 1/2 inch left of what was a full bottle. That morning he too had ordered pancakes, so he was left with a choice of blueberry syrup or whatever flavor red is.

Needless to say, these days when we both order pancakes, waffles, or French toast, he gets first dibs on the maple syrup. It never fails to give us a good laugh.
